Fair Family Chore Chart Maker

Add your children and their ages. The maker suggests chores each child is old enough for, splits household jobs fairly, rotates them every week, and prints one chart per child. Free, no sign-up, nothing leaves your device.

How the work is split

ChildMinutes per week
Child 1 (5)235 min
Child 2 (9)375 min

Older children get a bigger share, and jobs rotate each week so nobody is stuck with the same one. Times are rough estimates.

How to make a chore chart that lasts

  1. Add each child and their age. The list only offers jobs a child of that age can usually do.
  2. Pick the jobs. "Everyone does their own" jobs, like making the bed, go on every child's chart. Household jobs, like setting the table, are split between children.
  3. Choose how many weeks to print. With 2 or 4 weeks, jobs rotate so the same child isn't stuck with the same job.
  4. Print, or save as PDF. Each child gets their own page. Put it where everyone can see it, like the fridge.

Why a fair split matters

Most arguments about chores are about fairness: "Why do I always have to do the dishes?" When a 12-year-old and a 5-year-old share a chart, equal jobs aren't fair, and neither is giving everything to the oldest. This maker gives each child a share that matches their age, then balances by time, not just by number of jobs.

You can see the result before printing, in minutes per week for each child, and change the jobs until it feels right for your family.

Tips that help charts work

  • Show first, then hand over. Do a new job together a few times before it goes on the chart.
  • Keep the list short at the start. Two or three jobs per child is plenty for the first week.
  • Agree on the reward together. It can be a privilege, a family activity or pocket money. Write it on the chart.
  • Reprint when the chart stops working. A new layout or a rotated set of jobs often restarts interest.

Chores by age: what children can usually start

These are starting points, not rules. Every child is different: show them how first, then let them try on their own. The maker uses the same list.

AgeChores they can usually start
Ages 2โ€“3Put toys away, Clothes in the hamper, Clear my plate, Feed the pet
Ages 4โ€“5Make my bed, Tidy my room, Match the socks, Set the table, Water the plants, Dust the shelves, Wipe the table
Ages 6โ€“7Pack my school bag, Put away my clean clothes, Sweep the kitchen floor, Sort the recycling, Unload the dishwasher, Fold the laundry
Ages 8โ€“9Load the dishwasher, Vacuum one room, Take out the trash, Clean the bathroom sink, Rake leaves, Help cook dinner, Walk the dog, Write the grocery list
Ages 10โ€“11Wash the dishes, Mop the floor, Change the bed sheets, Wash the car, Clean the bathroom
Ages 12+Wash my own laundry, Clear out the fridge, Cook a simple meal, Mow the lawn

Time estimates used for the fair split: small jobs about 5 minutes, medium jobs about 15 minutes, big jobs about 30 minutes.

Questions parents ask

How does the fair split work?

Each job has a rough time (5, 15 or 30 minutes) and a count per week. Older children can take on more, so each age has a share: a 4-year-old counts as 1, an 8-year-old as 1.5, a 10-year-old as 2 and a teenager as 2.5 to 3. Jobs go one at a time to the child who is furthest below their fair share. Only children old enough for a job can get it.

Why do the jobs change each week?

Many parents find a chart stops working after a week or two once the novelty wears off. If you print 2 or 4 weeks, a child who did a job last week is less likely to get it again, so the work stays fair but the chart feels new.

Can I use it for one child?

Yes. With one child, every job you tick that suits their age goes on their chart.

Should chores be paid?

Families do it differently. A common approach is to keep everyday chores unpaid, because everyone helps at home, and pay only for extra jobs. Add any extra jobs as your own chores and write the agreed amount in the reward line.
